About the Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.
Compensation: $79,000 - $84,000 annually
Schedule: full time, Monday - Friday, primarily during standard business hours
Location: 37 Grove Street, San Francisco. Fully in-person for the first three months, then the option to work remotely one day per week.

Position Description:Compass secures a significant portion of its revenue through grant processes. This team secures private and public funding to support Compass' programmatic work to prevent and end homelessness for families in San Francisco and currently includes an Institutional Giving Director and Institutional Giving Associate. With the support of the Institutional Giving Director, the Institutional Giving Manager will participate in all elements of the grants process, including researching funding prospects, developing and managing relationships with funders, preparing grant submissions and reports, and supporting administrative systems.
Specific responsibilities include:
Grant Funder Research:

  • Support Institutional Giving Associate with prospect research; as appropriate, reach out to potential funders to determine funding fit and develop relationships.
    Proposal and Report Writing:
    • Gather information and data needed from Compass's internal stakeholders in support of grant proposal and report submissions.
    • As needed, and with the support of the Institutional Giving Director, write and submit funding proposals (primarily for foundation and corporate grants)
    • Assume the majority of responsibility for the management of most grant reports
      • Monitor the grant cycle of foundation and corporate grants and maintain clear records for when reports are due and when they were submitted
      • Compile outcomes and financial accounting for grant reports from internal stakeholders
      • Write a report and submit to the Institutional Giving Director for timely review
      • Ensure timely and accurate submission of the report
      • For both proposals and reports, draft, support, and/or edit the creation of grant budgets and expense reports
      • This will tend to be the bulk of your workload
        Grants Stewardship:
        • Support the Institutional Giving Director in maintaining institutional donor relationships
        • Provide general oversight to the tracking of donor communications (which is primarily done by the Institutional Giving Associate)
          Grants Management:
          • Support the Institutional Giving Director with grants management by checking in regularly with program leads on awarded grants and the finance team to help ensure compliance, appropriate expenditure, and accurate financial accounting and reporting
            Administration:
            • Along with the rest of the Institutional Giving team, support the maintenance of the internal repository of current data and research on family homelessness and other topic areas related to Compass programs and services
            • Along with the rest of the Institutional Giving team, support the maintenance of grant files in a manner that is accessible and comprehensible to the rest of the team.
            • Provide oversight to Institutional Giving Associate as they maintain the team's database records for grant proposals, submissions, and all deliverables
            • Under the direction of the Institutional Giving Director, collaborate on creating and implementing workflow optimization, inter- and intra-departmentally, and within the Institutional Giving team
              Editing and Miscellaneous Support:
              • Support the Institutional Giving Director in reviewing and proofreading newsletters, fundraising letters, brochures, and other development materials prepared by other Development staff, as needed
              • Other development and institutional giving-related tasks as needed
                Qualifications:
                • Minimum of 3-5 years of successful experience in grant research and writing; demonstrated competence will be required
                • Experience handling large portfolios (10+ grants or six-figure organizational budgets), including experience drafting and editing expense reports and grant budgets.

                • Ability to convey information and requests accurately, effectively, and concisely to internal and external stakeholders
                • Strong verbal, analytical, and organizational skills
                • Ability to easily understand the big picture
                • Detail-oriented and thorough
                • Excellent proofreading skills
                • Energetic self-starter, able to work collaboratively as well as independently
                • Comfort with Google Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, Salesforce, and experience with internet prospect research
                • Flexible, patient, and adept at multitasking time management, project management, and adhering to deadlines
                • Commitment to continual improvement of work

                  Compensation and Benefits:
                  • Salary range: $40.50 - $43 per hour / $79,000 - $84,000 annually. Offer amount depends on experience.
                  • Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation your first year, increasing to 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.
                  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
                  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5.
                  • Membership in OPEIU/Local 29 union.
                    Location and Covid safety:
                    • 37 Grove Street, San Francisco. Fully in-person for the first three months, then the option to work remotely one day per week.
                    • Covid vaccination required for all staff.
